1970 retirement age

Born in 1970 (Updated March 2023)

The subject of retirement ages has become very complicated in recent years as the government sets out to equalise state pension ages between men and women. So if you were born in 1970 then you may be wondering when is your retirement age?

Initially men and women had retirement ages of 65 and 60 respectively but the retirement age was changed for women to 65 and subsequently for both men and women has been increased beyond this.

Those who were born in 1970 currently have a legislated Sate Pension age of 67.

Although recommendations have been made by the 2017 and 2023 independent reviews to change this to 68, it seems that time is now running out to be able to legislate for these changes.

Ongoing Reviews

There are ongoing reviews of State pension ages and in fact the review that reported in March 2017 recommended a change to age 68 which the government said they were going to implement. However, this did not happen.

State pension ages are designed so that we spend around a third of our life in retirement and so they are likely to increase further as life expectancy gets longer.

If you want to see how you can find out how much state pension that you will get when you retire then check out the page here for further information on this.

Currently it is possible for you to take your private pension from age 55 so this may be a possible way to bridge any gap you may have in your pension savings but remember that if you take your pension early you may not have enough to cover your whole retirement or you may get a lower annual amount if you take an annuity payment. Obviously it is always worth getting advice on what is the best option in your circumstances.
