Born in 1979 (Updated March 2023)
If you were born in 1979 and you are wondering ‘what is my retirement age?’ then read on…
The Pensions Act 2007 has set your retirement age to 68.
In July 2017 the Cridland independent review recommended that the increase in retirement age from 67 to 68 should be brought forward to 2037-39 but this does not affect you as you already had a retirement age of 68.
The second independent review in 2023 recommended that the increase to age 68 was not as quick as the Cridland review but sooner than the current legislation so that also does not change your retirement date! So your retirement age is 68 and that means you can retire (i.e. draw your State pension benefits) in 2047.
The thing that the recent independent review does change is that your retirement age is now extremely unlikely to change in future. This is because it has been stated that the government do not plan to introduce any increases in retirement ages more frequently than by one year in every 10. So in theory the retirement age should not increase to age 69 until after 2047.
The government has said that their aim is for people to spend just under a third of their working lives in retirement and as the life expectancy of the population increases, so will the age at which people are able to retire and this is one reason why retirement ages will continue to go up.
