Retirement Age – Born in 1976
Last updated on April 10th, 2023
When is my retirement age? (Updated March 2023)
So you were born in 1976 and maybe you are confused about when your retirement age is as there have been so many changes to State pension ages in the last few years and also many proposals for changes.
There is legislation in place that dictates when people are able to retire and draw their State pension at the moment but those ages/dates can change if further legislation is introduced.
So for those born in 1976, the current legislation says that you can retire at age 67. This legislation was but in place by the Pensions Act 2007.
However, both independent reviews (Cridland in 2017 and Neville-Rolfe in 2023) have proposed that the change to age 68 is brought forward by a few years that would include people born in 1976. These proposals have not been put into legislation and there will be no new legislation until at least after the next independent review.
This means that it is entirely possible (and some say probable) that your retirement age will change to 68 at some point in the future. Legislation will need to be introduced to do this though.
Ongoing Reviews
There are ongoing reviews of State pension ages and we will need to wait for the next review to see if there have been any significant changes.
One main aim of keeping the State pension affordable and fair is the assumption that people will spend a third of their working lives in retirement. Therefore as life expectancy increases, so will the State pension age. This assumption forms part of the the reviews that take place periodically.
In your case you will still be expected to spend around a third of your adult working life in retirement even though you will probably be retiring a year later than originally thought.
