2019 Spending Review
Last updated on January 23rd, 2022
There is much going on in parliament right now as we are all aware but one thing that happened yesterday was the 2019 Spending Review which was delivered by the Chancellor Sajid Javid. The spending review is different to the UK Budget although some people could be confused between the two understandably.
The UK Budget 2019 is not due until October but who knows what will happen and when it will actually take place with the political upheaval we have at the moment.
The 2019 Spending Review just focuses on departmental spending plans and spending for public services. In the case of the 2019 review, this is a one year review, but more often the spending plans are set out for a number of years in advance and this means that a Spending Review may take place only every few years or more.
The government summary of the spending increases are summarised as follows:
- Increase in departmental spending
- Extra £13.8 billion for public services
- Extra money for schools, the NHS and social care
- 20,000 more police officers
- 10,000 more prison spaces
- More money for the armed forces, bus services and post Brexit funding
In terms of anything linked to retirement age we will likely not see anything announced until possibly the budget or when the results of the judicial review into women’s pension ages are announced (which we are still waiting for and don’t know how long that will be).
